Six Songs You Should Add to Your Playlist
Disclaimer: I'm on a big aeroplane and don't have time to write much of anything. Also it's only five degrees warmer in Scottsdale than it was in St. Paul on Sunday. But it isn't snowing.
I think these songs are good. Some of them are popular/new. Most of them aren't. The common thread is that I enjoy them and maybe you will, too.
"Down On Me," Good Flying Birds
My youngest tips me off to all these Chicago bands they're into/friends with/friends of friends with. I think this is my favorite of the lot.
"Choosin' Texas," Ella Langley
I guess this is the number one song in the country, not just the number one country song? Either way, immaculate 1970s Dolly Parton vibes.
"Lovefingers," Silver Apples
Civil War was just kinda "meh" for me (with the exception of another great Jesse Plemons performance), but the soundtrack, including this 1968 proto-synth rock number, achieved a kind of uneasy tension that the film didn't.
"It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," Them
Elite Dylan cover, up there with Hendrix and Polly Jean Harvey. Lead singer would go on to wear a purple jumpsuit in 1976's The Last Waltz.
"Honky Tonk Women," Ike & Tina Turner
Another cover. Mandatory disclaimer: Ike Turner was a world-class piece of shit. But Tina and the Ikettes sound so good on this.
"The Cute Things," Dry Cleaning
I endorse British women speak-singing over crunchy guitars. Always have.
